Beginning the Bookshelf

While I really wanted to start on my sewing closet, I decided to organize my bookshelf first so I could use my desk and my husband wouldn’t trip on my stuff anymore. Yesterday, I emptied it out and moved it in the middle of the office because I wanted to give it a new finish. I drove around for a while thinking about how to change it. Paint would probably be the best, but to do it right would require lots of effort. I didn’t want to wait for it to dry. But, most importantly,  I worried about paint fumes in the house bothering Robin. I thought about gluing paper on it, but, again, I didn’t want to wait for it to dry and if I didn’t like it I’d have to contend with glued on paper and overlapping edges. So I decided to try starching fabric on to it.

image

I followed the recipe described here and was curious to see how it would work on the bottom of the shelves. I was careful to think about the dark faux wood behind the fabric I chose, but I wasn’t careful with my piece preparation – I overlapped in some spots and have holes in others. My husband helped me paint the starch on and apply the fabric, especially on the lower parts, so I wouldn’t aggravate my back.

I think it looks nice – not so much a dark hulking presence in the room! Tomorrow, I’ll start loading it up and hope I’ll get a better picture!

A wrench in the gears…

Posted on December 6, 2012 by nochaosnoorder_lkd0dk Posted in health .

Sunday, we rearranged some furniture and put Robin’s crib in the bedroom. Once we were done, I bent to pick Robin up and pulled a muscle in my back. I’ve been pretty limited in what I can do this week. :/

A letter:

Posted on December 5, 2012 by nochaosnoorder_lkd0dk Posted in heart, relationship .

I’ve heard a rumor from some elves about a letter my cousins will be receiving :

Dearest W and P,
As I was making 50 gallons of hot cocoa for the elves’ afternoon snack, my husband, Santa, rushed in the kitchen. “Merry! W and P are moving! Please make sure they aren’t missed!” He was in such a hurry to finish the toys in time for his trip, he used his finger-to-his-nose-with-a-wink-and-a-nod trick to disappear and go back to the workshop! I wish he wouldn’t do that in my kitchen. It gets sparkles in my flour.

Well, I asked one of my kitchen helpers to finish the cocoa while I went to my office. You see, there are so many children in the world, Santa and most of the elves work 363 days a year (two days off for our summer retreat in Hawaii) building and wrapping toys, preparing the sleigh, and keeping the reindeer fit, that I have been keeping track of the paperwork and other chores for the last 30 years. I still prefer to bake cookies and tend to Santa’s suit, but someone needs to coordinate things, like making sure over 1500 hundred elves pack swim suits and flip flops, or that enough sun screen has been packed (winter elves sunburn SO easily!).

Hearing the news of your move, I called to my best friend and assistant, Holly, as I swept into the office: “We have an address change!” We made sure your presents were packed in the ‘Oregon’ part of Santa’s bag, removed your Washington address from Santa’s itinerary, and made sure your Grandma and Pa’s address was marked on Santa’s map with a star.

Now, I don’t normally write to all the children who move close to Christmas – there are a lot of them! But, when Santa tells me himself (usually we hear from the Post Master General) I know this is a very special case!

So, please don’t worry, Santa knows where you are. Please be kind to each other, do your chores, and leave some cookies for Santa and carrots for the reindeer. I worry they’ll waste away from hunger on this trip!

Merry Christmas, dears!
Love,
Mrs. Merry Claus

Future chaos!?

Mom J and me Christmas 1985My Mom, brother and I have a date after Christmas this year. While all of Mom’s Christmas decorations are out, cheering up the living room and kitchen, we are going upstairs to the attic to liberate all of the treasures my brother and I have packed away as we grew. J and I have been asking to get up there for several years now, especially since we both have had our own children, but Mom has been putting us off. “Oh, you have time for that later! … Wait until you have more room! …” It finally occurred to me that, in order for J or I to get our things, Mom has to get her things out of the way!  So, we all have a date for sorting through the attic. J and I promised to help Mom sort out her treasures and put them back in the attic and we’ll take our boxes to our current homes.

Until this last week, I’d been mentally cataloging my old toys: Strawberry Shortcake, Barbies, Sea Wees, dolls, dolls, dolls. And the books! My Nancy drew collection, CS Lewis, all those bad ghost stories, the Dolls in the Attic, … so many more! But an errant photo on Pinterest sent me down a trail past a long forgotten pastime: my dollhouse. Oh, Brae of Otterine, and your incredible talent! Why resurrect this long dead dream? Why must I now be cataloging my miniatures: that Chrysenbon bathroom kit, those 3 dozen “Nutshell News” magazines, the new stair set for the addition that I wasn’t sure how to install all those years ago, but now your blog has shown me how? Now, when space and time are the most problematic for me?!

I know it’s up there. I know we’ll be pulling its sheet shrouded form from deep behind the walls and catacombs of my dusty childhood soon. I know the last thing I need is a new major project.

I’ll need to find a place to put it.

Introducing my Some-Day-Perfect Sewing Closet!

Posted on December 1, 2012 by nochaosnoorder_lkd0dk Posted in heart, home, relationship .

I started at this house with my own craft room. It never looked organized, but I navigated it well enough and always had my sewing machines (my Brother serger, my 1974 Kenmore, and my 1954 Elna on a treadle) out and ready to use. Here is one part of the room when it was organized.

And here is a photo showing all of my unfinished projects piled up on my work table.image

Phew!  That’s a lot of stuff!

When I got pregnant, I thought a lot about how to organize our space. We’ve mostly been living like college kids with our computers and projects taking up the living room, but I wanted guests to feel comfortable – not sitting in a computer chair or a couch immediately behind a dining room table. I also knew with a crawling baby and walking toddler, we needed baby proof space for Robin to spend a lot of time in. Instead of turning my craft room into a nursery, I decided to make it our office and make the front room a real living room that is safe for Robin to play in. Either way, I had to drastically downsize my crafting projects and supplies.

I decided that I would keep out my scrapbooking supplies, since I anticipate doing a lot of scrapbooking about our family as well as a few, select sewing projects (snail trail quilt, doll cloths (when we weren’t sure about Robin’s sex), and yarn and embroidery supplies). Everything else either went to Goodwill or up in the attic.  Actually, almost everything went into the attic.  Someday I’ll have an even bigger studio and need all that stuff!

Warren and I moved our computers into the what-was-once-the-craft-room and my supplies were haphazardly crammed into the closet and a bookshelf. Here’s the sewing closet.  It is approximately 41″ x 21″ and 9 feet tall.

Observe my office area and scrapbooking shelf:

It’s all so MESSY!!  I’d like to sew a cover for my household notebook, but I don’t want to get into that closet.  And Warren keeps stepping on stuff trying to get to the window to pull the blind. Some day soon, I’m hoping next week even, I’ll be organizing these spaces so they function. And, after all the blogs I’ve been looking at, maybe they’ll look nice, too!

PS: Go buy something from my Etsy shop – I need the space!!  😀

Food town extravaganza!

Posted on November 30, 2012 by nochaosnoorder_lkd0dk Posted in health, home .

It has taken me most of the week to do (almost) all of the cooking I bought groceries for. I prepared ten crock pot meals and 2 weeks of breakfasts. I’m still working on 2 weeks of lunches. While the actual preparing of the meals was quick and easy, there was some pre-preparation that I should have accounted for, namely some pre-cooked chicken and the baked omelette. The first cooking session I stayed up too late because I started the chicken too late in the afternoon and, at the time, I debated not doing so many meals. But, now that I’m done, I see how being unprepared messed up my whole session. Next time, I think I’ll still prepare 10 meals, I’ll just know that I’ll do it over a few days.

Here’s my freezer all full of tasty food!
imageimage

The recipes :

1) Beef and Cabbage (saute onions, garlic and mushrooms; brown meat; cover with chopped cabbage and lid; once cabbage is wilted, add soy sauce. Serve over noodles or rice. (my own ‘recipe’) )

2) Amazing Lentils and Kale from allrecipes.com (It really is amazing. Easy to make and my carnivorous husband ate it and the leftovers readily. He did mention ham at some point, but it wasn’t too important to him.  Serving it with rice or bread may have made it last longer, but it already fed us for three meals, so I’m cool with that.)

3) Meatloaf with Rosemary Potatoes from Baked in the South

4) Honey Sesame Chicken from Baked in the South

5) White Chicken Chili from Baked in the South

6) Beef Stroganoff from Baked in the South

7) Thai Chicken Wings with Peanut Sauce from Baked in the South

8) Indian Chicken Curry from Skinny Mom’s Kitchen (although it was a “cook everything now and freeze your leftovers” type of meal it was pretty good.  I felt there was way too much cinnamon in it and would have easily benefited from onions, peppers, and carrots too.)

9) Salsa Chicken (for Quesadillas) from Skinny Mom’s Kitchen

10) Pho (which isn’t a freeze-ahead kind of meal, I just wanted to use some rice noodles and my husband loves Pho!)

11) Spinach and Feta Oven Omelet Breakfast Bagel Sandwich from Skinny Mom’s Kitchen

12) Blueberry and Banana smoothie packs as inspired from Skinny Mom’s Kitchen

Each meal is at least enough for four meals – that’s 2 nights of dinners for Warren and I! And so far, two of the meals had even more than that – lunches for me! 🙂 So, 10 dishes will make at least 20 dinners. We’ve declared Friday night “Pizza night,” so that’s another 4 dinners. I guess that’s not a full month of meals, but it’s close enough for me!

I spent $168 although I got many groceries using WIC. I also feel I saved a lot of money buying meat in such large quantities. Both steak and chicken were nearly half the price when bought in “value packs”. We also had some staples on hand already (oil, salt, sugar, etc) and vegetables from our CSA (which I guess technically increases how much we’ve spent on food, but we paid in advance for those veggies  so we don’t have to shell out any money now.)

So, while a little overwhelming to start, I think this is a very profitable endeavor and will probably do it again next month!

Ok,so remember when I said…?

Posted on November 29, 2012 by nochaosnoorder_lkd0dk Posted in health, heart, home, relationship .

Why haven’t I posted anything in the last few days? Because the camera in my tablet keeps crashing the whole thing when I try to take a picture! Grr… And as I described in too much detail just a couple posts ago, I am just not successful at blogging unless all the components are working. And they weren’t.

Anyway, we had two appointments this week.   …   It occurs to me, I wasn’t originally going to talk in much detail about Robin’s health here, but it really is integral to my anxiety, exhaustion, and efforts-in-organizing.  It impacts all of my four “focuses” (relationships, health, home, and heart), so I think will!

Feeding clinic was unusually short. Two of the three specialists were absent, yet it still took us an hour and a half. Robin tried thickened sweet potatoes and, after an initial gross-out face, he seemed interested.  Not eager, but interested. We talked about the pros and cons of putting in a g-tube rather than the nose tube. We also talked about when to do another swallow study (next January).  Even though the appointment went well, Robin has been showing increased  signs of reflux the last two days. Not fun for any of us! To do item: call Dr re: reflux meds

The eye exam went well and it was really easy – no forcing Robin still or touching his eyeballs! Did some vision field tests with a cute block and very animated assistant before she put dilation drops in his eyes. We waited a half hour and then the optometrist came and looked at his eyes. Retina and nerve fine, vision right where it needs to be (slightly far sighted right now), and both eyes working together and equally. He said about 50% of preemies end up needing glasses because one of their eyes develops at a different rate from the other.  So we’re not worried about retinopathy anymore, but we are watching for vision differences. We go back in six months and we won’t have to do the dilation again, so it’ll be even faster and easier.

Monday I finished the rain barrel and cut the wood for the changing table too small. :/ I have decided to ask my dad to put it together for me (To do: call dad re: assemble changing table)

Several mid-progress projects.

Posted on November 25, 2012 by nochaosnoorder_lkd0dk Posted in health, home .

This week started with a trip to the Pulmonologist for Robin where we learned he continues to progress with his lung/breathing health and we were able to lower his oxygen from 1/4 liters per minute to 1/8 liters per minute.  He continues to desat (oxygen levels go below 92%) at night, so we turn him back up to 1/4, but when he’s awake he’s doing great!  He’s also been eating more and more from his bottle, so that is a huge relief! I can’t wait to get rid of these tubes!

I also started three projects that were not on my list of things to do and I completely forgot to take any pictures  Which is fine, I guess, because it’s not all that exciting.  First, Robin nearly weighs 15 pounds now and will be too big for his bassinette soon, so we brought up the crib and, with some hole filling and repairs, we’ve put it together … in the living room.  I haven’t decided if we’re going to use this crib since it’s been recalled or if we’re going to ask Santa-in-law to get us a new one. Either way, we’ll need to do some bedroom rearranging and that is when I’ll take photos.

There was also a changing table who’s shelf boards had gone missing.  I have found some wood in the basement (free!) and need to cut it into three pieces before that can be assembled.

And third, we really need a rain barrel with an overflow valve to move water away from our back door.  It is surprising how many places Home Depot has rubber gasgets. I kept cycling through the 5 areas looking for just the right thing. And I’m still not completely satisfied with what I have.

There has been progress on previously-selected projects.  I keep procrastinating the next step in Robin’s scrapbook:  date all the photos.

But I finally decided on a menu and went grocery shopping today! We will have dinners for a month and breakfast, lunch and snacks for two weeks in the freezer soon — all for $168!! Tomorrow is going to be a lot of work getting all that food ready! But I’m excited – it should be easier and healthier than what we have been doing and, we’ve already demonstrated, way cheaper!!

I will finish the changing table, rain barrel, and meal preparation tomorrow! I will share pictures tomorrow, too!
