Office organization so close to complete!

Posted on April 30, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in heart, home .

I have finally organized my desk. The bookshelf looks great. The office supplies are organized. Baby-proofing has been done.  I have just two things to do (not counting my husband’s desk or my sewing closet) and the office is DONE!!  Woo-hoo!!

The desk finally got fully reorganized because Robin kept trying to get under the table to play with the cables and power strip for my computer. We ended up putting the computer up on the desk. I wish we had another alternative, but this was the only way it would work for us right now. But, it’s over where it’s hard for me to get to anyway, so the majority of the accessible desk top is clear and ready for projects!

I ended up changing my desktop filing system from the one I showed months ago because the files wouldn’t sit straight and I couldn’t fit my Project Life cards in it very nicely. I switched to a different basket and made a container out of cardboard for the cards. Using a $.99 napkin holder from Goodwill, I coral my files and I keep it all restrained and portable on a fun tray someone gave me.

Another trick I’ve done that deals with photos is the customizable stamp also seen on the tray. I put my, my husband’s and son’s names on it so when I print my monthly batch of pictures I can just stamp them all with our names. I cross out the name of anyone who’s not in the picture and write in anybody else while I add the date.

And, for a taste of the future, the last two things to do before the office is completely considered done are:

1) Clean off the serger (including mending and doing the 3 new projects that have accumulated)

2) Refinish my chair! ICK!!

A Comment on Spring Cleaning…

Posted on April 23, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in health, home .

It’s not working for me. Not with my darling boy with me! So, I have resorted to what my friend Maria and I talked about in comments, which was to do one chore all around the house at a time.  So far, it’s been working…

Last week I dusted, swept, and wiped down all the ceilings and walls. This week, I have washed the interior windows and will be cleaning off the porches tomorrow.  It really has been easier for me to wrap my head around doing one thing in each room and, while nothing will ever be CLEAN, it will at least all get cleaned at some point.

Except I need to sweep at least every other day.  This kid of mine is getting covered in cat hair and dust and it’s going up his pant legs. ICK.

Polymer Robin robin

Posted on April 18, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in heart, home .

Before Robin was born, I received a small figure of a woman who had a space in her chest.  While I was pregnant, I kept some paper leaves (for “Sprout”), but once Robin was born, I wanted a little bird to fit in there. I made one out of polymer clay.

Where we were did not have very good ovens for baking it, so I left it ‘raw’ until I got home.  When I did, I burned it up good!  So, while I was experimenting with flour/salt dough, I thought I’d make another one.  … this took a couple tries!

My first idea was that the body was too thick while the little head was too thin, so I decided to use an aluminum foil ball for the center.

Then I added the orange belly:

Rolled it into a tear drop shape and bent the point over a bit for the head:

I like to use ball point pens to make the eyes, but I use a straw that I squish flat to make the faux feathers:

Then I baked it at the lowest setting on my oven (200 f) and still burnt it!DSC05012

So, I made another one (which I liked better, actually), turned the oven off, and let it sit in the slowly cooling oven for 20 minutes.  This time, it seemed to work! It’s not squishy anywhere and not burnt, either – Yay!

And here is the little bird where it will live:

Baby proofing

Posted on April 12, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in heart, home .

Since his birthday, Robin has been scooting everywhere and we were frantically baby-proofing the house. One thing that needed special attention (and isn’t really quite done), was the Wii.

The internet cord and flashing light was irresistible to Robin. Oh, and it was on the floor. (Darn, no before. Again.)  While the TV was on a sewing cabinet without the sewing machine in it, there wasn’t much room for the Wii without getting in the way of the tv. And, it would still be visible with lots of other plugs and cords around.

So I took the sewing cabinet apart and added a bottom to create a shelf.  I still need to figure out how to put the one side back on so it’ll open and close, but that will be for another day.

Removing screws from the side with the handle that didn’t really open anything:

Side removed – that was easy! :

2013-04-12 12.31.52

“Shelf” put in. I used peg board so there would be good ventilation in the cabinet.  I did not count on the ‘front’s’ decorative edging to leave the shelf visible. Bleck.  On the other hand, now I didn’t have to worry about drilling holes for electrical wires to come out of!  Also, helper babies don’t really help. They chew.

2013-04-12 15.05.06

So, I screwed the ‘front’ back on and installed the shelf. It is just resting on the edges of the legs. I may go back and add some strips of wood to the sides and across the middle.

2013-04-12 15.44.342013-04-12 15.49.18

I took the handle off the old front and made it the ‘back.’ Except, now I’m not sure how to attach the new front because the legs gain stability by being screwed to it. I may need to cut some holes after all.

2013-04-12 15.50.59

Regardless – it works well holding all the plugs and wires and Wii and Robin has shown no interest in what’s inside!   … for now!

Office supply shelves

Posted on March 20, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in home .

The next step in my office/scrapbooking organization was to deal with the office supplies. There are more than I would have thought!  At the beginning of this quest of order, the office supplies started out in piles in front of and in the bookcase (lower right).

office

The Solution was a totally ineffective bookcase hidden behind my husband’s desk. You can see it peeking out there, but what you don’t see is that the shelves that aren’t visible are relatively empty!

2012-09-26 15.49.40

With a little rearranging in February, we moved the shelves out where we could use them and moved the office supplies – which by this time had migrated to a huge pile on the right side of my desk (not pictured) – haphazardly onto the shelves so I could work on that lamp issue.

2013-02-28 14.11.31

I finally sorted the boxes out and finished organizing them. I also put labels on!

2013-03-20 11.49.18

It would be lovely if I could leave the shelves like this (sans my helper):

2013-03-20 11.46.57

But, we have too much stuff, so I had to use the wasted space over the boxes, but it’s still a HUGE improvement!!  Yay!

Recipe Recycle

Posted on March 14, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in home .

I have to give up my illusions here…

I don’t like to cook.  Sometimes I fantasize that I will become passionate about cooking, so I look at recipes and cookbooks, but I don’t. And so I collect books and recipes on cards and from magazines and I never do anything with them.  I found three recipe card boxes. One had a bunch of Martha Stewart recipe cards that I never used. Another is empty. The third had all the random recipes I DO use crammed in it. Since I am a techy girl, I am abandoning the cards.

I spent the weekend transcribing (or finding online) all of the recipes I would like to someday make and saving them in the recipe app I am using (My Recipes). There are pros and cons to it, of course.  I like that I can tag and sort, make grocery lists, change proportions, but especially that it saves the recipes in my DropBox. It doesn’t let you easily track nutrition information or plan meals and calculate meal nutrition info, but the developer is pretty responsive so it may be a feature someday. Also, it is kind of a pain to add ingredients one at a time – I’d love to be able to just copy/paste from a text file, but that’s pretty unreasonable to expect.

ANYWAY – I am all done! Here’s the stack I recycled:

2013-03-13 23.15.45

There were a few that I wanted to keep because my mom or grandma wrote them, so for now I have put them in plastic sleeves in my Household Notebook in the Meal Planning section.

And here’s the reveal of yet another project: The Family CookBook.  We’ve already made a PDF of the original one (113 pages of recipes, photos, and illustrations), but I’d also like to have them in My Recipes or at least a searchable index available. And then we need a new and updated one! It would be nice to have all the old and new recipes available online when I’m done with it, too.

But, I will save that for another day!!  O.o

Revamped Tea Tin of Doom

Posted on March 8, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in home .

Remember this tea tin?

wpid-IMG_20121107_221513.jpg

I didn’t like how things were organized inside:

wpid-IMG_20121102_221522.jpg

It’s pretty haphazard in there and you have to pull things out and cram them back in there.  I also decided it was too big on my counter, so I made a new one.  I painted a Christmas cookie tin and tried to use a stencil and then cut-out tape to paint the word on it, but I had to sand and repaint twice and finally just had to do it by hand. I printed the word “Tea” on some paper, cut it out and then traced around it with pencil on the lid. Then hand painted it.  The paint job is not that great. Don’t look too closely…

I used a cereal box to make the dividers and covered that with scrapbook paper.

It even fits on the ledge out of the way! Nice!

Wall mounted board

Posted on March 3, 2013 by nochaosnoorder_lkd0dk Posted in heart, home .

Problem 1: We have an articulated arm lamp that we like for a variety reasons in the office, but it is a floor lamp and is currently ON my desk. That’s two square feet of prime space that I want for my projects.

2013-02-28 14.11.40

2013-02-28 14.12.01

Solution: Get it off the table by putting it on the wall. To do that, I solved a different problem.

Problem 2: In rearranging, one of my cork/magnetic boards had to be taken down and it needs a new home.

2012-09-26 15.49.09

Solution: Remove the lamp from the lamp base and attach it to the board, then mount the board securely on the wall.

It took a little finagling  but I got the lamp on the board finally and up on the wall – I think it looks great!  I also took the opportunity to put up some decorative shelves for photos. The space is really starting to come together!

Paperless manuals

Posted on February 22, 2013 by nochaosnoorder_lkd0dk Posted in home .

Remember my adventure in going through my files? I had alluded to my manuals in a post about my household notebook where I made a tab for them.  Well, while going through my files, I found so many I had to put them all into their own notebook.  Well … I don’t like the notebook.  The manuals are often too big and bulky for the page protectors I used.  Also, I have a whole bunch of them! And finally, I am rarely going to look at any of them, ever.  SO. I went through the notebook and found all the manuals in pdf format on the internet.  There were only a few that I couldn’t find on the manufacturer’s website, but a short email to their customer service quickly resolved that. The pile on the right are the manuals that are being recycled. On the left are the five manuals that are being kept. And they now fit in the Household Notebook! Yay!2013-02-22 12.50.17

Undersink cleaning!

Posted on February 20, 2013 by nochaosnoorder_lkd0dk Posted in home .

I got to start a little on the Spring Cleaning/Organizing of the Kitchen. I went through all the cupboards and culled what I could and I found new homes for things that don’t belong in the kitchen. I asked my husband to resolve all the items in the “to return” basket which he did and he went through his stuff that accumulated in his adopted corner of the counter. It’s not done enough to share, but one thing I did get done was cleaning and organizing under the sink! Yay!

I forgot the before photo again, but here is the cupboard empty of things:
2013-02-20 20.41.17

All the stuff under there went on the counter for sorting:
2013-02-20 20.43.02

Here’s what will go back in after it’s cleaned:
2013-02-20 20.50.42

I cut a hole in the lid of this plastic container and stuffed all the plastic bags into it:
2013-02-20 20.54.01

I used Command hooks to hang our gloves (after they’ve dried) and put the dish washing supplies in neatly:
2013-02-20 21.53.07

And then I put the cleaned plastic bag holder, garbage can, and recycling bins back in:
2013-02-20 22.04.46

I debated about trying to label things, or put them into matching containers, but I decided that I usually don’t keep a lot down there. And the only things that get out of hand down there are bags and sponges and they both seem well corralled now. I would like matching and labeled trash/recycling containers, but I have no budget for those types of things right now. Maybe I’ll take a Sharpie to them! And the plastic bag container needs some love, to…
