Play kitchen

Posted on December 31, 2014 by fairyguts Posted in heart, home, relationship .

I made a play kitchen for the boys for Christmas and it has been a huge hit these last few days! Robin knows exactly what to do with it.  He knows the little pot holders are for opening the oven and taking the muffin pan out. He knows the washrags are for washing dishes and the towel is for drying. He spends so much time playing and playing and (the best part!) when I cook, he cooks.  Here are some photos of the creation.  Most of the supplies came from The Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Two drawers and an old, kitchen cupboard:

With a screwdriver, the drawer fronts come off and leave two boxes. I cut the fronts down for the oven doors.

2014-08-18 19.03.32

All parts cut up, sanded, filled and sanded again.

2014-09-01 19.16.40

I guess I didn’t take any in between photos, so here is the finished set!

2014-12-29 09.56.36 2014-12-29 09.56.11 2014-12-29 09.55.18 2014-12-29 09.52.02 2014-12-29 09.51.20 2014-12-29 09.51.10 2014-12-29 09.49.13 2014-12-29 09.48.54

Material list:

ReStore:  2 drawers (10% off) = $7.20; Drawer handles (10% off) = $2.25; faucet = $8.75; towel hook = $0.10; cupboard (50% off) = $2.50; cabinet hinges (for fridge) = $2.30; stove knobs = $0.50

Fred Meyer’s:  Screws = $1.49

Goodwill:  cookie tin (for sink) = $0.99

Home Depot: Paint and supplies = $43.86; rubber feet = $5.85; screws = $1.18; magnetic latches = $3.92; no clearance hinges (for oven) = $10.98

The Dollar Tree: Oven racks = $1, kitchen towel = $1

Total (not including paint): $50.01

And I could have kept it cheaper if I’d been willing to wait and watch the ReStore for hinges, latches, and rubber feet. And, if I weren’t being picky about paint color, I could have gotten much cheaper paint there, too.

Sharing poster for Riverbend Hospital

Posted on June 30, 2014 by fairyguts Posted in heart, relationship .

While Robin stayed at SacredHeart Hospital at Riverbend, I found a source of comfort along the hallways: posters made by families showing how their kids grew and developed. So I made one of Robin for other families!

Scrapbook: DONE!!

Posted on May 31, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in health, heart, relationship .

Yay! I finished Robin’s hospital scrapbook! I think it turned out well.  I don’t have super-cute and involved layouts and decorations, but it’s still interesting to look at as well as read.

2013-05-30 17.02.09

Here are a couple of my favorite pages. This first one I especially like because I used string to point to the things that were on Robin.  I think this helped emphasize how bound he was and how it made people feel that he was unapproachable.

2013-05-30 17.02.40

This one took a lot of time. At Doernbecher there was a family relations person who hosted luncheons and craft times. One of the things she had was “story beads”. She had made a list of common things families with babies in the NICU went through and paired a unique bead with each event.  The idea was that you could string all these beads together to represent your child’s story.  I decided to be super elaborate (of course) and made it a timeline.  Each silver bead is a day starting with February 26th (the day I was put on bed rest).  Each event I put immediately after the appropriate day. Finishing that up took a while (I just *had* to run to the bead store, now didn’t I?) but then, since it would be too thick and awkward in the scrapbook, I scanned the strand and deleted all the scanning junk around the beads before labeling all the beads!  In the photo I’ve included the actual bead strand above the finished printed version.  The strand will hang up in Robin’s room someday.

I’m leaving it out for a while so people can look at it, but then it’ll be packed away and brought out only once in a while until all the kids are older.

Princess cakes

Posted on May 12, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in relationship .

My cousin needed help decorating cakes for her daughter’s 4th birthday present. We had a lot of fun hanging out. She made the cakes and the icing and cleaned up after me and I colored and iced the cakes. We both added bling.  I liked how that worked out!  I got to eat the cakes and did no cleaning!!  😀

Teething necklace

Posted on May 2, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in heart, relationship .

I saw a necklace for moms to wear while their baby was teething on the blog Away We Go via Pinterest.  I emailed one of my aunties with a plethora of supplies and she brought me a baggie of wooden beads and a strip of fabric which I sewed into a tube and knotted beads into.

Robin does not like to chew on it and would prefer that I not wear it, since it rubs against his head when he burrows into my neck.  Oh well!

Robin’s Hospital Scrapbook

2013-04-11 23.22.42

I have been working on this project for the last three weeks in every spare moment I can find and I still haven’t gotten much done.  I printed out all of the photos related to my pregnancy and our time in the hospital with Robin. I stamped and wrote the names of the people in the photos and wrote in dates. I sorted them chronologically. I put them in an album so I can sort them into stories and have been putting those stories into the scrapbook. Yay, me, making progress!  But I haven’t felt any of it was photo/blog worthy.

So far I have completed the front and back of three pages.  It took only three pages to summarize my pregnancy. Including the month on bed rest in the hospital! At the time, it felt like what was happening was epic, but really … it was the most un-exciting vacation I’ve ever taken. I read, crocheted, and played on my computer for a month.  Woo.  Hoo.   But, I guess it makes things easier now! 😀

Robin’s birthday party

Posted on March 27, 2013 by fairyguts Posted in heart, relationship .

He’s a whole year old! I spent a great deal of time making decorations for his party. Early in the week (while the husband was at a conference) but late at night (while the baby was sleeping) I had a sandwich delivered and I dyed eggs. (Did you know Jimmy Johns delivers big fountain sodas and delivers UNTIL 4 AM!!??)

2013-03-28 21.11.54

I emptied 3 dozen eggs and, using the recipes and procedures described at “not martha”, I dyed them up, leaving them to dry until the morning.

2013-03-29 11.28.21

I was so pleased with how vibrant they were! The magenta was indistinguishable from the red (for me), but it worked out just fine. I filled them with candies and stickers, then glued matching tissue paper over the holes. They were a big hit with adults and children at the party!

2013-03-29 11.28.33

Next, I was inspired by Half Baked – The Cake Blog to decorate his cake like a robin’s egg. I went a bit extreme, though, when I decided to make a two-tone cake to look like a hard boiled egg. Here’s what I ended up with (my dad made the cake stands for me, straight from this wedding blog):

2013-03-31 13.02.34  DSC04847

One change to the directions given on the blog was that, instead of directly dabbing the cake with a brush, I cut the brush short, wore gloves, and drew my thumb against the brush to fleck cakes with chocolate.  It was messy on my hand, but didn’t get everywhere else.

DSC04811

To top the cake with little eggs (I didn’t like what I saw at the stores) I tried to make my own. I flecked them in the same manner as the cakes. First, I stuck pins into the ends of chocolate eggs (foil removed) and melted some candy chips:

2013-03-29 11.28.04

I used the pins as handles to dip into the candy and then as hangers to let them dry:

2013-03-29 11.28.16

After flecking them, I put them on the cake and cupcakes.

I also played with plastic eggs making a banner (inspired by skiptomylou) that ended up being not very noticeable hanging from the tree and a wreath (inspired by u-createcrafts) which I forgot to photograph.

DSC04841

We took his very first photo next to his height chart (inspired by ME! I’ve been making these for nearly 12 years now!) and I’m looking forward to doing this year after year. I’m sure he’ll be more comfortable with grass by next year and will stand on his own!

DSC04838

(Oh, I forgot I made a number “1”, following creative jewish mom‘s blog – you can see it on the other side of the chart from Robin)

It was a beautiful day and we had fun playing with the family in the spring sun.’

Happy Birthday, my darling bird!

Echocardiogram

My poor sweet stoned baby (sedated for medical exam).

My poor sweet stoned baby (sedated for medical exam).

For this extensive Echocardiogram, his Cardiologist decided he should be sedated so they could be certain to get all the pictures they wanted.  He giggled at the ultrasound wand thing being rubbed on his belly and chest and kept trying to put the technician’s fingers in his mouth.  The anesthesiologist gave him graham crackers – one for each hand – which he gnawed on.  It took him until the next day to really get back to himself.

The results were great, though!  His ASD has nearly closed making him “like 30% of the rest of the world”  (according to the cardiologist) and will begin being weaned from his Sildenafil. She did want one more Echocardiogram in three months after he’s had plenty of time to get off the medicine and reach a new “normal”. But good news!
